Applied Optics Laboratory

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a fantastic tool that enables us to see the cross-sectional in-vivo real-time image of a living tissue without any physical dissection. A working OCT system has been implemented for the first time in Korea by combining the advanced technologies of optics (fiber and bulk) and electronics. We are designing an advanced all-fiber-based OCT system that can give sub-micron resolution. Recently, bulk-type full-field OCT system having ~ 1 µm high resolution has developed and several biological samples imaging are demonstrated. A femto-second laser and specialty fiber are considered as the tools enhancing the resolution. ODT (Optical Doppler Tomography) and FD OCT (Fourier Domain OCT) are under consideration.

Applied Optics Laboratory started with the study in fiber gratings. Especially, cascaded Long-Period fiber Gratings (LPG) have been the main scope of the Lab. With the fiber gratings, we have measured the properties of various fibers and fiber modes. We are struggling to be able to design, analyze, and fabricate state-of-art fiber gratings for DWDM and sensor systems, which include apodizing, chirping, and cascading techniques. Fabricating and modeling of Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCF) now became one of the major interesting fields of our Lab. The recent research scope has been expanded up to bio-medical optics. We have implemented the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) system that is possible real-time cross-sectional imaging of a living tissue with sub-micrometer resolution. We have developed TD (Time Domain) OCT, SD (Spectral Domain) OCT, FF (Full-Field) OCT systems and FD (Fourer Domain) OCT, Optical Doppler Tomography (ODT) systems are designing and under development.
